Yahrzeit Observance
A yahrzeit is a powerful Jewish custom to mark the yearly anniversary of the passing of a loved one. It is customary to light a memorial candle in your home on the evening of the Yahrzeit. If there is a memorial plaque in our sanctuary, the electric light will be lit. You can contact Marie Katzen if you would like to inquire about a memorial plaque.
Many people have the tradition to come to Shabbat morning services on the Saturday before the Yahrzeit so you can say Mourners Kaddish in the memory of their loved one. If you do attend, we will honor you with an Aliyah to the Torah.
One may also sponsor the Shabbat Kiddush on that weekend in honor of the Yahrzeit.
It is also customary to give tzedakh (charity) around the time of the Yahrzeit. This can be in the form of a contribution to the synagogue or to any other worthy cause.
